PianoRollArt: Pixel Art for Music Nerds

Image in, MIDI out. PianoRollArt transforms any image into playable MIDI notes. Dark pixels become notes, light pixels remain silent. No music theory knowledge required—just load an image and see what happens. Looks cool, sounds weird, pure fun.

How it works

Load any image, choose one of five retro looks, and export the result as a standard MIDI file. Add a synth in your DAW and hear how your image sounds. That's it.

5 Retro-Looks

Grayscale: Full depth of detail, every pixel counts.

Threshold: Hard pixel contrast, black or white, no compromises.

Dither: Three algorithms to choose from. Atkinson for the classic Old Mac look, Floyd-Steinberg for fine gradations, and Ordered Grid for the typical grid pattern.

Edge Detect: Only the contours remain. Wireframe style like a technical drawing.

Halftones: Printing grid as used in screen printing. Dots instead of pixels.

What can you throw in?

Logos, selfies, memes, pixel art, QR codes, barcodes, album covers, screenshots from retro games, cat photos. Really anything you can upload as an image.

Bitwig Integration

Bitwig Studio users will get direct integration via a controller script in the future. This will allow the generated MIDI notes to be used directly in Bitwig without any detours. The script is available separately on Patreon.
